Traditional
UK Boarding Schools
(Public Schools)
Traditional
British boarding schools have been around for a long time
as noted above. They were originally built to educate the
monarchy and the aristocracy and then later, as the industrial
revolution changed the world, the offspring of merchants,
industrialists and the officers from the British armed forces.
Many of these schools produce amongst the best examination
results in the country sending large numbers of students
to the most competitive universities in the UK, including
Oxford and Cambridge.
They
are renowned for the teaching of a "well-rounded" education,
which puts great stock in the benefits of spiritual and
physical education as well as academic teaching. The weekly
timetable of traditional schools reflects this with time
being put aside for sports, music and other activities aimed
at developing life skills. Overseas students would normally
stay in dormitory accommodation during their stay at a traditional
school. Older students may get a single room in the later
years.
