Types
of Schools in the UK
For
non-natives of EEC countries, unless parents are resident
in the UK it is not possible for their children to enter state-funded
schools. However, the UK is home to the world's most prestigious
private high school sector (known as "public schools" in the
UK) with some schools over 1000 years old. Overseas students
have been taking advantage of the benefits of a traditional
high school education in the UK for hundreds of years. Indeed,
many of the world's monarchs and leaders have started their
education in world famous schools such as Dulwich, Eton, Harrow
and Roedean. Many famous public schools in the UK welcome
overseas students. In addition to the traditional "public
schools" the UK also has a large selection of "tutorial schools"
which also welcome overseas students. These differ slightly
in the weekly timetable, but also have an excellent record
in examination results and getting students into the more
competitive of the UK universities. In addition to tutorial
school there are also 6th form colleges for finishing "senior
high school" (university entrance) qualifications. These are
usually state sector schools and may be part of larger "Community
Colleges" - or further education colleges, as they are known
in the UK.
