School Introduction

In the Junior School, pupils progress through and beyond the National Curriculum, beginning with the Early Learning Goals and moving through to the attainment targets of Key Stage One and Two.

Form teachers take their own classes for most subjects in the early years, but towards the end of Year 6, specialist teachers provide greater depth of instruction as well as easing the transition to the Senior School. Alongside the standard curriculum that includes ICT, Drama, Art, French, Music, Religious Studies and Physical Education, pupils receive a Personal and Social Education course to build awareness of choice and influences in their lives. Guest speakers, visits to plays, exhibitions and events during the year vary and enrich their education.

Wells is a centre of excellence in the creative arts. In music, the school癒礎s international standing offers pupils unique opportunities to discover and develop their choral and instrumental talents to the full. Pupils from the Junior School provide boy and girl choristers for the Cathedral Choir and the highly acclaimed Junior School Choir performs locally and further afield.

The Lower School deepens and broadens the learning process begun in the Junior School. Through a balanced education in the Arts and Sciences, pupils are helped to make an informed choice for later academic specialisation.

The National Curriculum subjects are taught, forming the core around which pupils develop new interests and aptitudes with the introduction of more languages, technology, humanities and practically based subjects.

Everyone takes part in Physical Education (PE), games and outdoor pursuits and learn the key aspects of Health Education through teaching in Science and PSHE. All pupils study Religious Studies, focusing on the Christian tradition but including other world religions.

This provides the perfect foundation for the critical challenges of the Upper School, starting with the two-year GCSE course, where, again, we promote as broad a range of subjects as possible, with a core curriculum and many options.

Students entering the Sixth Form find a vast range of opportunities via A Level and beyond. It caters for those who want breadth and variety of academic possibilities and for those requiring depth and intensity. Musicians can adopt a flexible programme, which allows them more time for music practice and performance.
